In the distant past, the loss of teeth was something that our ancestors just couldn’t do much about. Fortunately for us all, dentures and other removable dental prosthetics have evolved over hundreds of years. If you’re missing all or many of your natural teeth due to decay, accident or trauma, or disease such as periodontal disease, removable dental prosthetics and dentures can provide you with modern, efficient, and comfortable teeth replacements with a natural look.

What Is Involved in Getting Dentures?

When a patient has a condition that requires dentures in order to restore the look and function of a full set of teeth, the first thing that must be done is a consultation. At this appointment, the dentist will be able to assess the patient’s needs, for example, is a full set of dentures required, a full arch, or just a partial? Will there be a need for dental extractions or can existing teeth be saved? The flexibility of removable dental prosthetics and dentures means there are a lot of variations on treatment options to choose from. Dr. Stein will discuss your condition, your needs, and your ultimate goals with you in order to make an individualized treatment plan.

After consultation, any extractions that are required will be made. Depending on the type of dentures or dental prosthetic you will be getting, you may get your dentures at this point (immediate dentures). Immediate dentures are placed at the time of extraction and have the benefit of making the healing process easier on the patient, but can require adjustment to maintain a good fit after the healing has completed. For complete dentures, a mold will be made of your mouth, and a model will be constructed to be used in the fabrication of your full arch dentures. When partial dentures or dental prosthetics are required, Dr. Stein will work with the existing dentition to fabricate a device that will give you seamless function and aesthetics. This treatment is tailor-made for patients and offers patients a way to replace numerous missing teeth without affecting the remaining teeth.

Caring for Your Dental Prosthetics and Dentures

There are a few precautions you should take with your dentures and partials.

  • Just like natural teeth, dentures should be brushed daily with a soft bristled toothbrush. You should also continue to brush your gums and tongue as part of your oral care routine.
  • Keep dentures in a glass of water (not hot, or you may warp the material and make the dentures unwearable) or denture solution when not in use
  • Handle with care. Many patients find that lining the bathroom sink with a towel is a good way to prevent chips or breaks if you drop your dentures when cleaning them. Be sure to keep out of the reach of children and pets.
